Super Typhoon Ragasa
Ragasa (Nando) was a powerful super typhoon that made landfall in the Philippines and China.
Ragasa formed on September 18, 2025 as a tropical storm in the far west Western Pacific Ocean. Ragasa slowly strengthened into a typhoon over the next two days. On September 20, the system began rapidly intensifying as it continued moving west towards Asia.
A day later, on September 21, Ragasa was designated a super typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h). As rapid intensification continued, Ragasa reached its peak strength and became a Category 5 storm with winds of 165 mph (270 km/h). Near peak intensity, Ragasa made landfall on Panuitan Island in the Philippines early on September 22.
Over the next several days, Ragasa continued its journey west across the South China Sea. Typhoon Ragasa reached China on September 24, making landfall in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province ushering in powerful winds and flooding rains. Nearly two million people were evacuated along China’s coastline, ahead of Ragasa’s arrival.
Ragasa’s intense rainfall caused a barrier lake banks to burst in Taiwan, killing at least 17 people with many more missing.
