Tropical Cyclone Maila

Tropical Cyclone Maila formed over the Solomon Sea on April 4, 2026. Over the next several days, the storm slowly strengthened while remaining nearly stationary. On April 7, Maila had maximum winds equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, making it the one of the strongest storms ever for the Solomon Sea.

Maila brought significant impacts to the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, with the latter experiencing floods and mudslides that resulted in the deaths of nearly a couple dozen people.

For more information on Maila, visit the Joint Typhoon Warning Center or Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology.
