On September 21, Gabrielle strengthened into a hurricane as it continued to push further north into the Atlantic. Over the next 24 hours, Gabrielle rapidly intensified into a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (193 km/h). Gabrielle reached peak strength on September 22, as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (220 km/h). Gabrielle maintained hurricane strength as it raced northeast across the North Atlantic.

Over the next few days, Gabrielle gradually weakened while maintaining hurricane strength.
