Lightning flashes could be seen easily in three different storms across the US.
Notice that the clouds appear dark and the city lights look washed out. This occurs due to the Day/Night band’s light sensitivity on VIIRS and the lack of moonlight during the timeframe.
The changing moon phases impact the appearance of different objects and lighting in the Day/Night band. The moon phase was a waning crescent during the night of this animation.
