Great North American Eclipse of 2024

On April 8, 2024, North America along with parts of the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean experienced a total solar eclipse.

The eclipse began over the Pacific Ocean with the Moon’s shadow crossing into North America over the state of Sinaloa in Mexico. It then tracked northeast into the United States over Texas. From there, it moved over the Midwest and Northeast US, crossing into Eastern Canada and the Canadian Maritimes before ending over the North Atlantic Ocean.

In a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes directly in between the Sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth. To observers in the path of totality, the Moon appears to completely block out the Sun, with only the Sun’s corona being visible, causing the sky to darken significantly for several minutes.

The next total solar eclipse to occur over the continental US will happen in August 2044.

Moon's Shadow Followed by Severe Weather in Texas

Description:

Low-level clouds over Texas dissipated as the moon’s shadow passed over yesterday, quickly building again once the sun returned. An unstable environment that afternoon lead to severe thunderstorms initiating after the eclipse, lasting into the night.
