Early November Lake Effect Snow

Many in the United States received their first taste of winter as a large blast of cold weather plunged southward starting on the weekend of November 8-9, 2025.

In the Midwest, a lake effect snow event descended upon the states that border the Great Lakes. Places in Michigan, northern Indiana, and the Chicago metro area were the hardest hit, with some places receiving over a foot of snowfall by the morning of November 10, 2025. Chicago woke up to around 4 inches (10 cm) of snow, limiting travel around the city. Through the following day, lake effect snow continued to drop several inches of snow across the northern US, like in western New York.

The cold swing dipped far enough to cause temperatures to plunge even well into the southeast US, where many saw their first below-freezing temperatures of the season. The cold blast placed millions of people in those southern states under a freeze warning, with many locations setting new record low temperatures even as far south as Florida.
