Tropical Storm Calvin was a weak tropical cyclone that brought heavy rain and strong winds to Hawaii.

Calvin strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane the week of July 9 over the Eastern Pacific Ocean, before weakening over the 14 and 15th.

Calvin passed south of Hawaii on July 19, as it progressed through the Pacific Ocean. Even though the storm was 235 miles south of Honolulu, it brought high wind speeds, rough surf conditions and heavy rainfall to the island.

Calvin was predicted to dump anywhere from 2 to 10 inches of rain on the Big Island, with the total rainfall predicted between 4-8 inches. Maui was forecasted to receive 1-3 inches.

Hilo, HI was placed under a tropical storm warning, and minor flooding was reported. Electrical disruption was also reported due to several tree branches falling onto power lines. No evacuations, injuries or severe damages were reported.

Calvin was the third tropical storm to impact the U.S in 2023.
