Tropical Cyclone Zelia
On February 11, 2025, Tropical Cyclone Zelia formed off the coast of Western Australia. Zelia rapidly intensified over the next 48 hours into the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 240 km/h (150 mph), becoming Severe Tropical Cyclone Zelia. Its forward speed was nearly stationary leading up to landfall, moving only at 1 knot (3 km/h) at times.
Around noon local time on February 14, 2025, Zelia made landfall along the northwest coast of Western Australia, known as the Pilbara coast, where it brought destructive winds and heavy rainfall. Zelia made landfall just over 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coastal town of Port Hedland, know for being the biggest iron ore export port for Australia.
Soon after moving inland, Zelia fell apart and become extratropical.
