Media Details

Ice swirling in the East Greenland Current as seen by polar orbiting satellites. Off the east coast of Greenland is an ocean current that is very important for the circulation of the northern Atlantic Ocean. The East Greenland Current (EGC) carries water from the Arctic Ocean to the North Atlantic. The top portion of the current is quite cold and low in salinity, due in part to sea ice melt and river runoff.  The EGC is the main way that sea ice gets to the Atlantic Ocean from the Arctic – it is estimated that more than 90% of the Arctic Sea Ice is exported out of the Arctic in this current. Some of this sea ice can be seen here, moving along with the current.
