Mid-March Tornado Outbreak
Beginning later in the day on March 13, 2025, a powerful mid-latitude cyclone formed and pushed across the United States, triggering dust storms, wildfires, and destructive tornadoes.
Strong winds pushed across New Mexico and western Texas on Thursday, March 13, lofting dust into the air. Dangerous wind continued on Friday and Saturday across the Southern Plains. Near the Colorado-Kansas border on Interstate 70, at least eight people were killed in a 71 car pileup caused by a dust storm. Low humidity across Oklahoma combined with the wind to fan multiple wildfires across the state, leaving four dead and over 170,000 acres burned.
Leading the strong wind was powerful front that produced severe weather across multiple states Friday and Saturday.
