Krathon was a powerful typhoon in the South China Sea.
After lashing the northern islands of the Philippines, Krathon turned north towards the island nation of Taiwan.
Krathon strengthened just south of Taiwan, briefly earning the status of a super typhoon.
On October 3rd, 2024, Krathon made landfall as a category 1 typhoon near the major city of Kaohsiung, ushering in intense winds, torrential rains, and flooding. Soon after landfall, interaction with the rugged terrain of Taiwan weakened Krathon to a tropical storm.
